5 Must Read Books For A Modern Military Man

A true Modern Military Man is not born, he is built.  We have the difficult job of honoring a long proud heritage of military traditions whilst keeping up with a rapidly changing world.  We also have the added stress of risking our life defending our country which those who haven’t served cannot and will not ever understand.

There is not one great leader out there who did not learn from others.  Every teacher has been a student, just as every leader has once been a follower.  While just reading a couple of books will not make you into the man you want to be, these five are a great start to getting you on the right track.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Dale Carnegie

A classic since 1937, this book teaches simple principles about human relationships that you can apply to your professional and personal lives.  You could be the greatest leader in the world but if you don’t know how to communicate effectively and connect with those around you, your abilities will be wasted.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Stephen Covey

A common sense approach for navigating life to be an effective leader, husband, father, etc.  Covey provides a model for personal growth and happiness that is applicable for anyone in any phase of their life.  Many consider this a classic of our generation and once you read it you’ll understand why.

The Prince

Niccolo Machiavelli

Machiavelli’s The Prince makes Frank Underwood of House of Cards look compassionate.  Written in 1513, Machiavelli spells out a no holds barred approach to seizing and maintaining power without the barrier of ethics.  This is an essential read for anyone who aspires to a position of power in the military or civilian world.  Though we don’t endorse Machiavelli as a “good” guy, it is important to at a minimum understand the concepts he discusses since you better believe that there are people out there that have no moral code and are willing to do whatever it takes to be number one.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

Robert Kiyosaki

One of the quintessential must read books for a Modern Military Man who is smart enough to know his pension might not be there for him someday.  Hate to break it to everybody but military pensions are a constant topic of debate in Congress and at some point we will lose many of the benefits we have today.  Don’t get caught with your pants down.  Kiyosaki spells out in an incredibly simplistic fashion what makes the difference between those who are poor or middle class and those who are rich.  Warning: this book may change your life and make you way wealthier than you ever would have been.

How To Be A Gentleman

John Bridges

Chivalry is not dead!  Do not join the majority of people from our generation who are forgetting the most basic of manners.  Bridges walks us through basic rules of etiquette and class that will separate you from the masses.  If you follow his rules, guaranteed you will always know how to behave in whatever social situation is required of you. Hint: girls dig guys that get the car door for them, it’s not weird.

These are just a few of many must read books that help our growth as a Modern Military Man.  Help us out and recommend some other must reads!
